UNDERGROUND INSTITUTE

The music industry is old, overwhelmed and conservative. Yet there is so much wonderful music out there that does not easily find an audience, partly due to the unequal distribution of promotional resources.

According to David Byrne's "How Music Works" that is due to a shift in the 1980's in the very foundation of the industry, a calculated move towards maximum profit, by minimizing the risks.

And yet, intricate, mind-stimulating music thrives on in the small labels, among the the curious and the well informed.

We would like to try to share resources, knowledge and experience, and create a network of internationally connectivity between the underground and the art-music scenes of various parts of the world.

The Underground Institute is run by artists. While its own roster is hard to pin down, all UI artists operate for years outside of a scene. Their work is a stand alone, often at the intersection of several genres.

The UI works through exchange and mutual support.

We are spread out across the globe, and strive to work with our long term international collaborators (promoters, festivals, radio stations).

We curate programs and selected events.
